Ezra Furman is a singer and songwriter from Chicago, IL. He crafts songs with the desperate urgency of a runaway and yet the discerning hand of a master sculptor. Since he picked up an acoustic guitar at age thirteen, he has been working tirelessly toward capturing the beauty, despair and headlong wildness of life, that too-often overlooked magic and poetry that makes us human. His songs are a shot in the dark that just may strike you at your core.
In 2006, The Harpoons were formed with the goal of complimenting Ezra’s madman songwriting, turning personal musical sketches into glorious, rollicking pop songs, and entering into that crazy and beautiful tradition that is rock and roll. Since their stage debut at Tufts University in February 2006, Ezra Furman and the Harpoons have played in rock clubs in 18 cities in 11 different states and are now thoroughly homeless in Boston, bursting into the local scene with gusto and charm.
Since then, the Harpoons signed to Minty Fresh Records, the eminent Chicago indie label, and headed straight to the studio. In January, the Harpoons layed down the tracks for thier national debut, with producer Brian Deck (Iron and Wine, Modest Mouse, Josh Ritter). As you read this, those recordings are being passed through the final stages of mixing and will soon head off for mastering and distribution. This momentum and general madness promises great things to come for the band in the next year.
In addition to their role the band all of the Harpoons are students at Tufts University. Guitarist Jahn Sood is also a singer-songwriter in his own right, performing in Boston and his home town, Portland, ME. Bassist Job Mukkada is a singer-songwriter as well, but performs under the alias, Wilder Penfield. When not keeping time for the Harpoons, drummer Jordan Kozer remains shrouded in mystery and various luxury shrouds. Pilgrims come to see him in his Chicago headquarters carrying sick livestock and children for him to heal, which he refuses to do unless compensated in candy.
